Hollywood is infamous for fiery romances that quickly end in divorce.
Between living life in the limelight, media scrutiny and unconventional lifestyles, celebrity marriages are faced with many challenges that often become irreconcilable. From Kim Kardashian’s whirlwind romance that lasted 72 days to Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock’s marriage that spanned 120 days, celebrities are notorious for short-lived love.
However, short marriages don’t happen exclusively in Hollywood. Around 20% of all marriages end in the first five years, and nearly 1/3 of marriages end in the first ten years. In any divorce or legal separation, the length of the marriage can be a significant factor in deciding spousal support, as well as many other issues.
For marriages lasting less than ten years, the duration of the payment of spousal support is normally limited to one half of the duration of the marriage. For example, a marriage that lasted one year would have a spousal support termination date of six months. For marriages of more than ten years, however, there is a different standard, and a reservation of jurisdiction. As such, a marriage that lasted twelve years may have a spousal support duration period of more than six years. In addition, each case is different and needs to be analyzed on its own facts.
We compiled a list of some of the most well-known celebrity failed marriages, along with how long the marriage lasted. Most of the below marriages ended in divorce, with at least one ended in annulment. Nullity is disfavored under California law, and there are very limited grounds under which an annulment may be granted in San Diego Superior Court. Most marriages do not end with annulment, and instead terminate with either a divorce or legal separation. In an annulment, as opposed to a divorce, the finding is that a marriage never happened so there are no issues of spousal support or division of assets or debts.
