Fergie filed for divorce from husband Josh Duhamel on Friday in Pasadena, according to a court docket.

Fergie and Duhamel had announced their split in September 2017 after 8 years of marriage. The pair have been focused on co-parenting their 5-year-old son, Axl, since their separation.

The reason for the long separation before filing for divorce? A source told E News, “They took their time figuring things out and making sure it was the right decision…They had a long separation to see if there was a chance of things changing. Over time, it became clear that they had made the right decision and it was time to move on.”

As for the reason for the separation, it seems that the pair grew apart. Since the split, the pair have been getting along better than ever, and have been focusing on co-parenting their child.

Fergie and Duhamel took their time between separation and divorce to make sure it was the right decision. But what happens if you file for divorce, and then change your mind?

Luckily for the indecisive, you are not legally divorced until the Judge signs the papers. In California, there is a mandatory 6 month waiting period before that can happen. If you end up changing your mind, you can file a document to dismiss your divorce case with the Court.

Even though you can reverse the process before it’s final, it doesn’t mean you should. Like Fergie and Josh Duhamel, it is smart to think about the decision and take as much time as you need to make the right decision.

Filing for divorce is expensive and can be mentally draining. The first filing fee alone is $435. On top of attorney fees, you do not want to go through this process unless you are completely sure.

However, if you are considering divorce, we do recommend you speak to a divorce attorney as soon as possible. It is smart to know your options and to understand what life will look like if you do choose to get divorced.
