Bad news: An expensive wedding increases your likelihood of divorce.

Good news: An inexpensive wedding decreases your likelihood of divorce.

We’ve been told from an early age that our wedding day should be the most magical day of our lives. This is especially true for young girls. A wedding should be glamorous, big, and of course, expensive. But does that narrative we’ve been told by the wedding industry, jewelry companies and Disney princesses really translate to happier marriages?

According to a study by economics professors Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo M Mialon, couples who spend more on their weddings are more likely to divorce. Weddings that cost less than $1,000 showed a significant decrease in the likelihood of divorce compared to weddings costing more than $20,000.

The same correlation was found with engagement rings. The researchers found that the more money spent on an engagement ring, the higher the chance of divorce, especially once the cost of the ring is over $2,000.

Interestingly, the researchers found that going on a honeymoon significantly decreases your chances of divorce.

So our advice: Instead of splurging on the wedding, splurge on some quality time together after the wedding. It may help your marriage!
